Banda de Michael Stipe despede-se com "gratidão e espanto", após 31 anos e 15 álbuns de estúdio.Os R.E.M anunciaram o fim da sua carreira.


A banda norte-americana, formada em 1980 na cidade norte-americana de Athens, na Georgia, escreveu no seu site: "Aos nossos fãs e amigos: enquanto R.E.M., e como amigos de longa data e conspiradores, decidimos acabar com a banda. Despedimo-nos com um grande sentido de gratidão, e completude, e espanto por tudo aquilo que alcançámos. A todos os que alguma vez se sentiram tocados pela nossa música, o nosso mais profundo agradecimento por terem ouvido".


O último disco dos R.E.M., Collapse Into Now , saiu este ano. Na altura, a banda anunciou que não iria fazer qualquer digressão para promovê-lo.»
