MacGowan sofreu vários problemas de saúde nos últimos anos e esteve hospitalizado em Dublin até à semana passada por causa de uma infeção.

As mensagens de condolências têm-se multiplicado. O Presidente irlandês prestou homenagem ao cantor, que descreveu como um dos "maiores letristas da música".

O primeiro-ministro publicou no X, antigo Twitter que "ele era um músico e artista fantástico. "As suas canções captavam lindamente a experiência irlandesa, especialmente a experiência de ser irlandês no estrangeiro", escreveu Leo Varadkar.
